AthleteMonitoring: a new design for 56 pages in the existing WordPress

AthleteMonitoring is software that Olympic committees, professional clubs, universities and research institutes use to track the workload and health of their athletes. The website had grown over the years: tables instead of overviews, long lists of names, content hidden behind accordions. We redesigned every page, kept all of the content and switched the site over while it stayed in operation.

In detail

Same spot, same content: the old page on top, the new one below.

Old research page: studies in a pasted-in table
Before
New research page: studies as cards with search and filters
After

Research

The studies sat in a pasted-in table. Now they can be searched by title, author, year and topic, each study as its own card with a link to the article.

Old clients page: two-column list of names
Before
New clients page: cards with country, search and country filter
After

Clients

A two-column list of 128 organisations becomes cards showing the country, with a search and a country filter.

Old case studies: grey accordions

New case studies: cards with logo, country and key facts
After

Case studies

Instead of grey accordions, each case study shows logo, country and key facts before you open it. Each one now has its own page.

On mobile too

The old site squeezed its tables down to phone width. The new one rearranges the content for the small screen.

  • Search and filters work on the phone as well
  • Cards instead of squeezed tables
  • Compact header with menu and light/dark switch

A redesign without changing platform

The client wanted to keep WordPress and go on editing the site in-house. So we built inside the existing system and prepared the switch-over so that it ran within a short maintenance window.

Inventory

Every page of the old site recorded and backed up, duplicates and orphaned pages found. That gave us a plan with a fixed scope before any design work started.

Built in the existing system

The new pages are built with the WordPress page builder the client already knew. Text and images are still edited in-house, without a developer.

Collections with search and filters

Research, articles, blog and the client list were long lists. Now they can be filtered and searched by year, topic or country.

Switch-over in a maintenance window

A full backup first, all pages transferred in about two hours, then forms, CRM connection and every internal link checked. The customers' app kept running throughout.
